3:16 Bakery Shop Review

I was recently introduced to a great little bakery – 3:16 Bakery Shoplocated in the Franciscan Plaza
of downtown San Juan Capistrano.
I absolutely ADORE downtown San Juan (you know, right by the train station and Los Rios street?) This area just got even more enticing for me, now that I’ve had a little taste of 3:16 Bakery. Holy smokes! This little shop has it all- I’m not kidding you!
As you walk in, you are greeted with the lovely sounds of contemporary Christian music. Immediately Ciera started signing along. I love it!

From their high end gelato (with not so high end prices) shipped straight from San Fransisco available in 12 different flavors, their most popular flavors including pistachio, creme brulee, spumoni, and a specialty flavor only available from August-November- blackberry cabernet, which I might add people make a special trip in to this shop just for this flavor- it’s that good!  To their build your own fro-yo bar with a huge selection of yummy toppings, to their numerous bakery items- all baked from scratch daily. This place has got it ALL if your craving a sweet treat.

The owner’s Mauricio Lemus and his best friend opened up the shop about 2 years ago. You may be wondering about the name 3:16 Bake Shop. The name represents the bible verse: John 3:16 “ For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Being Christians, Mauricio and his business partner had been praying about opening and naming their bakery, and the name just came to them. It gives them a peace, not to worry about how well the business does, God has it handled- always. Let me tell you, they have nothing to worry about. They have won the people’s choice award for “best dessert” in San Juan 2 years in a row!
This shop is fantastic.
I tried several of their treats (back on the diet tomorrow, right?!?) Some of their most popular sellers are their custard puffs:
And walnut squares- which may just be my favorite!
This bakery does cakes galore, including wedding cakes (all which can be customizable)
some of their cookies include iced shortbread, florentines, butter, sugar, chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin

And pastries/danishes including croissants, fruit filled danishes, baby alligators, bear claws, turnovers, cinnamon buns… the list goes on and on!
the shop offers their customers specialized coffee drinks including cafe au lait, mocha lattes, cappucinos, cafe breve, chai tea lattes and hot chocolate.
The shop will also bake breads made fresh to order including sourdough, french baguettes, brioche, 6 grain, dinner rolls, pumpernickle and more.
You guys gotta check this place out! The shop is located right next door to a historic movie theater, which also serves dinner. What a perfect date night, dinner/movies and then stop by the bakery for a special dessert afterwards. Perfect! Tell Mauricio I sent you!
Mauricio has very generously offered the OC Family readers a fun giveaway. He’s offering one lucky winner a $40 gift certificate to the 3:16 bakery. Just comment on why you’d like to win, and I’ll choose a winner via random.org on Saturday August 2nd at 5pm. Winner will be notified via email. Good luck!
